From the Desk of Bailey DeMier | Teders Quackenbush Wealth Management
What does setting a volleyball have to do with managing your money? More than you’d think.
Meet Bailey DeMier — Murray State University senior, Missouri Valley Conference volleyball player, and our summer intern at Teders Quackenbush Wealth Management. As her internship wraps up and she heads back to campus, Bailey shares a reflection that stopped us in our tracks: the skills that make a great setter on the volleyball court are exactly the skills that make a great financial planner. Strategy. Adaptability. Communication. Being the calm, clear-headed person everyone counts on when the game gets tough. Read on for Bailey’s own words.
In a few weeks I’ll be returning to Murray State University as a senior majoring in financial planning and playing volleyball in the Missouri Valley Conference. My internship with Teders & Quackenbush has gone by quickly, however, I’m grateful to have learned so much from this experience about what it means to be a financial professional. Working with the team has made me realize how similar a career in financial planning is to volleyball, specifically my position as a setter.
A setter is commonly compared to a point guard on the basketball court. It entails a high level of responsibility to be in this position, as they are the coach on the court. A setter must know and implement strategy, be adaptable, and effectively communicate to everyone on the court. They are aware of the challenges and obstacles ahead of them and are ready to make moves based on their analysis of the game. Setters are adaptable to ever-changing conditions and find solutions to challenges proposed using tactics they obtained from experience in rigorous training. They are also the lead communicator on the court. Not only do they express themselves in a clear and concise manner, they listen to their teammates and coaches to encourage, correct, and ensure that everyone is on the same page to execute their collective goals.
Volleyball is a representation of life with ups and downs, planned and unplanned. You are there for your teammates through wins and losses — as the team at Teders & Quackenbush is for their clients. Chad, Chris, Amber, and Jeremy have shown me how they work as a team to develop plans that help each client build, manage, and protect their wealth through all of life’s transitions. I am grateful to have worked alongside each of them and I am excited to be a part of a new team as my athletic career winds down. I can’t wait to take on new challenges and find a passion in my new, life-long sport — financial planning.
Wishing you all the best,
Bailey
