When the Alarm Goes Off, Composure Is Everything
The fire alarm went off mid-game. Everyone stayed calm. The Hoosiers won anyway. Sound familiar?
It was a strange Tuesday night at Assembly Hall. A fire alarm. An evacuation. A tied score. And then — after the all-clear — a return to the court and a 74-70 Indiana victory. The team at Teders Quackenbush saw something in that sequence worth writing about. One word, to be precise: composure. Because when the alarm bells ring in your financial life, the response that serves you best looks a lot like what the Hoosiers did that night. Stay calm. Trust the plan. Finish the game.
The Night the Game Stopped — And Then Didn’t
A very strange thing happened during last Tuesday’s basketball game between Indiana and Wisconsin at Assembly Hall. And I’m not referring to the Hoosier’s much-welcomed victory. About mid-way through the second half, fire alarms went off resulting in the evacuation of the stadium and suspension of the game with the score tied. After officials determined that there was no danger to fans and the teams, the game resumed and Indiana went on to win 74-70.
One Word Sums It Up: Composure
At Teders & Quackenbush, we believe one word sums up this event: composure. In the face of uncertainty fans, coaches, and players maintained their composure. They followed rules and protocols to deal with the surprise and urgency of the moment. When play resumed the Hoosiers maintained their focus, executed their game plan, and prevailed over a worthy opponent.
What a Basketball Game Has to Do With Your Finances
Now, there are certainly reporters and sportswriters that chronicled what happened much better than this; however, as financial professionals or as clients, it’s important to maintain composure when something unexpected happens — when alarm bells go off.
Whether it’s breaking news about the economy, the investment markets, or something even closer to your home and family, your work or business, stay calm and remember the plans that are in place to deal with the unexpected.
Most Financial Alarm Bells Turn Out to Be False — But Don’t Ignore Them
Many times the alarm bells that sound in the financial arena turn out to be false. That is not to say you should ignore them. But almost always there is time to assess and evaluate what’s really happening or likely to happen and then make an informed decision on how best to respond.
